Steroids

What are steroids?

Steroids are synthetic versions of naturally occurring hormones that the human body produces. These carbon-based organic compounds are fat-soluible and can have many beneficial attributes, while others are known for possible life-threatening side effects. The two main types of steroids are anabolic and cortico; with anabolic being closely linked to many negative side effects while cortico steroids are useful to reducing inflammation and also treat many diseases and illnesses. The following is a list of what cortico steroids may be used to treat:

  • asthma
  • eczema
  • allergies
  • arthritis
  • colitis
  • kidney disease

Dangers of anabolic steroids

Anabolic steroids are the types of steroids that get the most amount of public attention, due to their lethal possible side effects. When used in moderation and monitored by a physician, anabolic steroids can aid in protein building and gaining muscle mass. But when abused, the dangers of anabolic steroids become quite clear. This is a list of possible side effects from the abuse of anabolic steroids:

  1. inhibition of natural hormones
  2. liver damage
  3. high cholesterol
  4. gynocomastia
  5. virilization
  6. severe acne
  7. "roid rage"
  8. baldness
  9. many others

The "reward" of anabolic steroid use

While both anabolic and cortico steroids can be beneficial in a medical standpoint, the regular use of anabolic steroids has possible "rewards" for those taking them. Bodybuilders, professional athletes, and even cops take anabolic steroids in hopes to increase their physical strength and physique. With anabolic steroids being derived from the male hormone testosterone, it allows for rapid muscle growth and shorter recovery time between training.
